DEXA, InBody or Tape: Which Body Composition Test to Trust?

For a detailed snapshot of fat mass, lean mass and bone, a DEXA scan is the most precise of the three tests, and an InBody-style bioimpedance scan is a good, cheaper option when you repeat it under identical conditions. A tape measure costs nothing and, used the same way every two weeks, is often the most practical way to see whether your waist is actually changing.

Search “DEXA scan Dubai” or “body composition test Dubai” and you will find clinics, gyms and pharmacies offering scans with very different price tags and very different claims. The useful question is narrower: which number can you trust enough to change your training or nutrition because of it? That depends on what each method measures, how much error comes with it, and how consistently you test.

What each test actually measures

DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) passes two low-dose X-ray beams through the body and separates tissue into fat, lean soft tissue and bone mineral, region by region. You see arms, legs and trunk separately, and most reports include an estimate of visceral fat.

InBody and other bioimpedance (BIA) devices send a small electrical current through the body. Water conducts it well and fat conducts it poorly, so the device estimates total body water and then calculates lean mass and body fat with equations built into its software. It never sees fat directly.

A tape measure records circumference: waist, hips, chest, arms and thighs. It makes no attempt to estimate fat percentage, which is a strength. There is no hidden equation between you and the number.

How accurate are DEXA and InBody?

In a 2022 study of 110 adults from several ethnic groups, DEXA and a multi-frequency InBody device both estimated body fat percentage within roughly 2.5 to 2.9 percentage points of a four-compartment reference model, the laboratory gold standard. A 2023 comparison found similar agreement for DEXA and the InBody 570, with individual results sitting up to about 5 percentage points either side of the reference.

In practice, a reading of 22% could reasonably be anywhere from about 19% to 25% for one person on one day. Both tools are good for groups and for trends. Neither is exact for a single reading.

If you are tracking change, repeatability matters more than accuracy. A 2022 study on DEXA precision found that repeat scans of the same person varied by about half a kilogram of fat mass and a little over half a kilogram of lean mass, even under controlled conditions. Run through the standard precision formula, that means a change smaller than roughly 1.5 to 2 kg between two scans can sit inside normal measurement variation.

Why your InBody number jumps between scans

Bioimpedance estimates everything from body water, so anything that shifts water shifts the result. The usual causes:

  • A large meal or a lot of fluid shortly before the scan.

  • Training earlier that day, especially in Dubai heat where sweat losses are high.

  • Alcohol, or a salty or high-carbohydrate dinner the night before.

  • Time of day and, for some women, the phase of the menstrual cycle.

  • A different machine, even another model from the same brand.

A swing of 1 to 2 kg in “muscle” between two InBody scans a week apart is usually a shift in body water. Treat each scan as one point in a trend and give it the same weight as any other single reading.

The tape measure is underrated

UK health guidance from NICE recommends keeping your waist to less than half your height, because a larger waist relative to height indicates greater health risk. It takes a minute to check and needs no machine.

To get a number you can compare, measure your waist midway between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone, after breathing out normally, first thing in the morning before eating. Use the same tape, keep it level and snug without pressing into the skin, and take two readings. If they differ by more than half a centimetre, take a third and use the average.

Pair the waist with one or two other sites that match your goal, such as hips, upper arm or mid-thigh. When the scale stalls but your waist drops and your arm or thigh measurement holds, you are usually losing fat while keeping muscle.

Which test to use, and when

  • Starting point: one DEXA scan is worth it if you want a detailed baseline, regional data or a bone mineral reading, or if you are building strength for the long term after 40.

  • Every 2 weeks: waist and one or two other circumferences, body weight averaged over the week, and progress photos in the same light.

  • Every 3 to 6 months: a repeat DEXA, or monthly InBody scans under strictly matched conditions if DEXA is not practical.

  • Every session: strength numbers. If your lifts rise while your waist falls, body composition is moving the right way.

Avoid switching between methods. A DEXA result and an InBody result taken on the same day will rarely match, and comparing one with the other mostly measures the difference between the machines.

How to standardise any body composition test

  • Same time of day, ideally morning, after using the bathroom.

  • No food for about 3 hours beforehand and no training that day.

  • Normal hydration: skip the large drink right before, and avoid arriving dehydrated.

  • Same device and, where possible, the same operator, in light clothing with no metal.

  • Note the conditions next to the result, so an odd reading can be explained later.

How EVOLVE approaches this

Measurement sits at the centre of the EVOLVE method: Audit, Plan, Execution, Tracking and Adjustments. The Audit sets the baseline, including body measurements, strength markers and the blood panel covering 61 biomarkers that every programme starts with. Tracking repeats the same measurements, taken the same way, at regular checkpoints, alongside training data from each 45-minute session.

Adjustments are made on trends across several checkpoints, never on one scan. If you are working on fat loss, the guides on what to track beyond weight and what to review when fat loss stalls cover the next step. Blood markers and any medical findings belong with qualified healthcare professionals, and a coach does not interpret them alone.

Frequently asked questions

Is a DEXA scan safe?

DEXA uses a very low dose of X-rays, and the scan takes a few minutes lying still. If you are pregnant, may be pregnant or have been advised to limit imaging, speak to a qualified healthcare professional before booking.

How often should I get a DEXA scan for body composition?

Every 3 to 6 months is enough for most people. Real changes in fat and lean mass take weeks to exceed the scan’s normal variation, so monthly DEXA scans rarely add useful information.

Can InBody track muscle gain?

It can show a trend over several months if every scan is taken under the same conditions. Short-term jumps in muscle mass on bioimpedance are usually changes in body water.

What matters more, body fat percentage or waist size?

For regular tracking, waist size is simpler and easier to repeat reliably. Body fat percentage adds detail but carries a wider margin of error. Together with strength and how your clothes fit, the waist tells you most of what you need. For longer-term health markers, see what a biological age test can and can’t tell you.
